Editorial Reviews About the Author (ca books for tet. 446-ca books for tet. 386 BC), Aristophanes, the son of Philip, the Cydathenaus DEME, was a prolific writer and well-acclaimed comedy of ancient Athens. Eleven of his plays survive forty nearly complete. This, together with fragments of some of his other pieces, providing the only real examples of a type of drama known as Old Comedy, and they are actually used to define the genre. Even as the Father of Comedy and the Prince is known of ancient comedy, Aristophanes had said that the new life of ancient Athens, more convincingly than any other writer. His powers of ridicule was feared and influential recognized by his contemporaries - Plato, Aristophanes' play The Clouds distinction, as a contribution to the libel trial and execution of Socrates, although other satirical playwright had a caricature of the philosopher. His second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a libel against the city of Athens. It is possible that the case was argued before the court, but the details of the study are not collected, Cleon and Aristophanes caricatured mercilessly in his later plays, especially the Knights. "From my perspective," he said of the chorus in this game, "the author and director of comedy is the hardest work there is." It is also known for some famous sayings such as "Through the words of the mind is winged."
